Kaylee Update (Includes photos)

Hi All

I know I don't normally update during the week... but I have something to actually post today, as well as the promised photos.

But first to the updates
I've been a busy bee tonight and now my bodice for my dress is 70ish% done.
I'm happy enough with it to post photos... well a photo.
Bodice... is 70% done...ish.. still need to add details... sleeves... the first layer of ruffles, and additional tailoring will be done later
My Dr Who scarf... it's long enough to go around three people.
My weird loki inspired head band thing...
4 pipecleaners

Also i'm reconsidering commissioning a loki cosplay costume and thinking about doing it myself... if anyone can forward me to any good tutorials, that will be a big help.

And Tomorrow is cosplay thursday... I'm going to do a partial Coraline cosplay wearing what elements of the costume I have. I'll post photos if I remember.

Happy Cosplaying
I'll post again as soon as I can

Kaylee and Coraline update, plus possible new costume and dr who scarf..

Hi everyone

It's been a couple months since my last update.
But I have things actually worth mentioning this time around.
I now have a sewing machine, which means I actually started sewing my Kaylee dress today. (FINALLY!)  The back panel is kinda confusing me at the moment, because this in general is breaking new ground for me. I'll post photos when I've got the bodice to at least a 50% finished stage, right now it's at the 17%ish stage.

I also now have a raincoat for my Coraline cosplay.
Which means all i really need now is possibly a blue wig and yellow gumboots.

Also for those who know me from other sites.. yeah... might have noticed a mild obsession with the character of Loki from  Avengers and Thor. If you haven't seen either already. GO AND WATCH THEM. they are awesome. back on topic,
yeah.
I'm currently considering a genderswapped loki cosplay costume as well.. either that or a dress inspired by loki's costume... possibly both.
I'll get back you all on that one, I still have Princess Luna from MLP to finish as well as my River Tam dress. but they are further down the list of things to get done.

Also I've knitted a seemingly freakishly long dr who scarf.
Pics will come when i next do a photo post. I got the pattern off here.
It was a fun activity and was something i've always wanted to make.

Happy Cosplaying
I promise photos ASAP

Fluttershy costume stuff (two quick things) and River Tam

Somepony uploaded an easy wing and ears tutorial on youtube.
I might consider using this
the video is here

Also considering getting a couple of wigs from this site
The luna one and the pale pink one. But it racks up to over $100 including postage, (i know it adds up to $75 on the site, but i live outside the US, so it's not quite so cheap)
which is why i'm only considering it at this point. But it's still cheaper than other sites though.
The Luna one might be worth getting though as a Coraline wig, I could always just say she grew her hair out.
I'll have to ask.
Also Considering dressing up as Princess Luna for Halloween next year... If i don't hate the character by then, So a good Luna wig might be worth getting before that.

My quest to find a pattern for River Tam's blue dress she wears in the movie isn't going well.
Found a site which sells them for over $200 nz dollars for one not including postage.... I'm willing to spend money on a costume, just not that much, it's cheaper for me to make it myself.
The dress is here if anyone wants to see it, it's pretty close actually.
At least now i know that it's actually two dresses instead of the one which could be annoying.
If anyone finds a good set of instructions or pattern online that will be a big help!

Just a quick update

Happy Cosplaying! :)

Updates for Illyria and Coraline, and New Costume: Fluttershy

Updates

Coraline
Found a yellow raincoat in the basement, needs a clean, but will be fine.
Decided to possibly drop the 'Little me' doll idea.
And that means all i need is the gumboots and the wig and that costume is done.

[X] Yellow Raincoat
[ ] Yellow Gumboots
[X] Jeans (i'm going to use a pair i already have)
[ ] Blue wig
[X] Dragonfly hairclip
[X] Button key

Illyria
Found a skirt i can wear, that is pretty close to the one she wears it the ep a Hole in the World.
Still need to do a make up shopping trip, that scheduled for a couple of weeks away when i have some more free time.
This costume will be worn on Halloween which is like a month or so away, after i come home,
But for school, so I don't have to worry about make up or anything, I'm gonna be River Tam

New Costume
Fluttershy

For those who follow my more recent updates, know that i have become a fan of the show My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic.
I've decided that me and a group of my friends are gonna be a MLP:FiM cosplay group for the Armageddon Expo next year.
This project along with my Kaylee dress are being saved for late November after my exams are done.

I already have a dress i'm going to use
so all i really need is wings and a wig and possibly a tail, ears and some cheap yellow slip on shoes.
I want to do a humanized version of the character, but i might end up going for a more anthro/furry type look if i have the cash.

Seen a few wigs online and they are pretty expensive especially in the style and length i'm looking for.

Wings however are a little bit more do able as i have found a tutorial online
(Link)
Just a matter of finding time to get the materials and making them.

So for the fluttershy costume, i'll need at least these

That's it for this update!

Coraline (part 2) ((Dragonfly Hairclip)) and Kaylee shindig dress update

Kaylee dress update first

The bodice pattern is still not complete, will try and finish this afternoon though.

Now on to Coraline and her dragonfly hair clip

I now have

[ ] Yellow Raincoat
[ ] Yellow Gumboots
[X] Jeans (i'm going to use a pair i already have)
[ ] Blue wig
[X] Dragonfly hairclip
[ ] Little me doll
[X] Button key

I made my own using Gold oven bake modeling clay, some plastic jewels, a hairclip, some hot glue and some PVA glue.

The clip is not as accurate as I'd like it to be but oh well, a lot of ones you can buy are not accurate either.
The dragonfly part has a wingspan of 7.2 centimeters and is 4 centimeters from head to tail.

I made a pattern out of paper, then I flattened the gold modeling clay to the thickness i wanted.

Then I put the cut out pattern on the clay and used a needle or pin to trace around it, before baking the clay.

after the clay was baked i used some PVA glue to stick the plastic jewels on in the desired arrangement on one side and then waited for a while for that to dry.

I hot glued the hairclip to the unjewed side of the dragonfly, with the narrower end of the clip pointing to the left. You may have to put quite a bit of hot glue between the dragonfly and the hairclip, for the clip to stay on. You also may have to reglue it from time to time.

New Costume - Coraline (Part 1) ((Button Key))

Recently re-watched Coraline, and wanted to make a quick costume.
I have chosen her distinctive yellow rain coat and jeans outfit, but i'm going to add a 'little me' doll and a the black button key to it.
The dolls i've seen for sale online are far too expensive, so i'm going to make my own, but i'll get to that point later.

All i have done so far is make the button key using a pin, a toothpick and some black oven bake clay. There are people that make and sell these online, but if you want to make your own there us how i made mine.

I'll need

[ ] Yellow Raincoat
[ ] Yellow Gumboots
[X] Jeans
[ ] Blue wig
[ ] Dragonfly hairclip
[ ] Little me doll
[X] Button key

To make the button key, it helps to find a good reference pic, i paused the movie at the scene when Coraline is setting then ghost children free and used that as my ref.

To make the button part of the key make a ball of the black modeling clay, then press it down with your thumbs. Leave a little edge on it. To make the holes use the pin to cut small holes near the center of the button.

Then i made thinish cylinder out of the black modeling clay and put it on one end of the toothpick before attaching the button with a small amount of the of the modeling clay.

I then covered the rest of the toothpick with a flattened piece of the clay, then cut out the bit using the pin.
This is where your ref comes in really handy.
when the bit is finished, attach it to your key with a little of the black modeling clay on each side.

then all you need to do now is bake it, if you used an oven bake modeling clay, Then thread a cord through the top button hole, tie it off and you are done. (you don't need to do this if you aren't going to wear it as a pendant)

Here are pictures of my finished key (Click on one to make it bigger)

I use this brand of oven bake clay
