Kaylee Dress. FINALLY FINISHED!

Yeah.... it's finally done....
Finished it as of about half an hour ago.
Now... I'm wondering what to do next.
I know i didn't update while I was sewing the ruffles and making the overskirt.
I should have, but i've been busy.
I'm so happy that this is finally finished though.

Kaylee Update and Possible new costume

Okay so I haven't updated for a bit..

Two things mainly. Bodice is basically done aside from tailoring and sewing on the buttons.... I also need a ribbon belt which I forgot about the first time..

also... I now have all the fabric i need for the skirt. and I caved a bought a hoopskirt.
because I'm lazy and I don't have a lot of time on my hands

The next quick costume i'm going to attempt is Bennett Halverson from Dollhouse. it's relatively simple aside from the part where the character of Bennett has a dead arm. In a sling with a black glove. Might be tricky.
other than that, I can basically use my own clothes aside from the red hairclip

Another day another update

still need to sew that on... sew the buttons and tailor it
then it will be done.
But hey, at least the sleeves are sewed on, and BTW I sewed the sleeves on by hand.

sleeves are done, but are currently unattached from the rest of the bodice until i figure out how to attach them.
I also now have the buttons and time to actually try and finish this.
My goal is to get the bodice done by the end of this week... though in theory... I could be done tonight.

So I might edit this post and throw up pics of the finished bodice.

Kaylee and Coraline update, plus possible new costume and dr who scarf..

Hi everyone

It's been a couple months since my last update.
But I have things actually worth mentioning this time around.
I now have a sewing machine, which means I actually started sewing my Kaylee dress today. (FINALLY!)  The back panel is kinda confusing me at the moment, because this in general is breaking new ground for me. I'll post photos when I've got the bodice to at least a 50% finished stage, right now it's at the 17%ish stage.

I also now have a raincoat for my Coraline cosplay.
Which means all i really need now is possibly a blue wig and yellow gumboots.

Also for those who know me from other sites.. yeah... might have noticed a mild obsession with the character of Loki from  Avengers and Thor. If you haven't seen either already. GO AND WATCH THEM. they are awesome. back on topic,
yeah.
I'm currently considering a genderswapped loki cosplay costume as well.. either that or a dress inspired by loki's costume... possibly both.
I'll get back you all on that one, I still have Princess Luna from MLP to finish as well as my River Tam dress. but they are further down the list of things to get done.

Also I've knitted a seemingly freakishly long dr who scarf.
Pics will come when i next do a photo post. I got the pattern off here.
It was a fun activity and was something i've always wanted to make.

I have finally started working on this dress
Though i'm kinda angry at myself for starting it so late, as this project has kinda been in the works for well over a year. But that's getting off topic. ANYWAY

So far I have cut and pinned most of the bodice
Though i can't sew yet as i do not currently have access to a sewing machine.
But i can tell you the front panel was a NIGHTMARE! and not in the pony way...

Halloween Photos - Illyria and River Tam updates

Happy first of the month....
and happy halloween for yesterday

I had a fun time...
though nobody knew what character i was all day... which sucked.
Okay...
So I dressed up as River Tam during the school day.... All i got were surprised looks from my friends to see me in a dress for once, and one comment of 'Nice Boots'

No photos because i forgot to take some before i got changed into my second costume for that day....

and for the Evening i was, Illyria
Now that I actually have photos for.
I actually looked pretty much like the character does in the episode.
My hair is still blue... i'm gonna wash most of it out after i'm finished writing this blog post

Finally got 'round to taking photos of my Illyria make up, decided in the end not to get the contacts.

Not much, but it will do

River Tam
Found a better dress at the bottom of my closet, a dress i didn't even know i had.
It's a little short, and it's not blue enough to be completely accurate, but it will do for tomorrow until I have time to sew a proper one.

Fluttershy
Not much as all i did was fix the cutie mark again.
The butterflies aren't that much work, just a little ribbon, thread and a strip of blue felt, safety pinned to the dress.

Ponies and cosplay (update)

Okay didn't complete my fluttershy costume. it still needs the wig, wings, ears, tail and Angel Bunny. We have decided on an anthro style costumes
And one of the butterflies for the cutie mark came off.
Still had a fun time at the pony party, made cupcakes and watched pony, nothing majorly special.
No pics as i didn't have enough charge in the camera and she didn't have one.

So didn't end up going cosplay shopping.
I really need to get that done before i go back to school...

Gonna draw up a River overdress pattern tomorrow as i think i have a dress in a similar style and length to the River's overdress.

Updates for Illyria, River Tam and Fluttershy

Illyria

Didn't end up going shopping today, that has been moved to tomorrow. So getting Illyria make up will have to wait until tomorrow. that's it for that costume.

River Tam

I have a dress that is the right length to be a mock underdress, so i can work with that for now.
So i can start on prototypes soon. But i need to do a little more research first as the dress isn't shown that well in the movie, which is annoying, but not so annoying as to put me off making this costume completely.
okay the dress has side seams apparently, well at least the bottom half does from what i can see from the 'jellyfish dress' shot on Miranda

Fluttershy

Me and my best friend are cosplaying tomorrow in a late celebration of it being 1 year since the first ep of MLP:FiM aired. we were both busy on the actual day so yeah.
So me and her are gonna have a pony party and dress up as Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.
I'll try and get a wig for tomorrow and i'm gonna make some temporary coloured card wings, my final ones will be felt or feathered, if i have the cash, unfortunately i'm rather lacking in yellow felt or feathers right now, so card ones will have to do.
I can finish the felt Angel bunny plushie and her cutie mark tonight though.

I'd better get onto that now then...

Illyria and River Tam updates

Possibly going shopping for the make up and stuff with a friend tomorrow.
Will post a list of what i got afterwards.
Don't know exactly what i need other than the list below, will print off some refs tomorrow, that should help.
If anyone reading this has cosplayed as Illyria from Angel before, COMMENT with what you used for your make up, this would be a massive help

I know i need
Blue temporary hair dye spray (For the hair streaks)
Icy blue lipstick or something to get my lips to look that icy blue like in the show
Icy blue contacts
blue eyeshadow
a darker eyeshadow or something i don't know.....
as for the other stuff, i'm massively confused about what to call it.
and a lighter and a darker something for the veins.
I'm hopeless with make up....
But i think that's everything i'll need

You know the chances of finding what you want online go down dramatically when your blog comes up on page 2 of the google search... LOL
yeah this happened to me when i was looking for progress blogs and stuff like mine on making River Tam's blue dress she wears in the movie.
So I went back to the visual guide and the movie and tried to get a good look at the dress.
Okay
it seems that it's two dresses worn as one, an under dress, which looks like it could be bought for not much and look right if it was the right colour, and an over dress which looks like i'm gonna have to make, but that doesn't look too hard, just a matter of finding a pattern and getting the materials and just sewing it. Shouldn't take me long, might even get to wear it for school on Halloween, which would be awesome.

Anyway
This will be edited TOMORROW with lots of shiny photos.
I'll try and get some stuff to finish Coraline while i'm out as i only need the yellow gumboots and wig for that.

Also considering getting a couple of wigs from this site
The luna one and the pale pink one. But it racks up to over $100 including postage, (i know it adds up to $75 on the site, but i live outside the US, so it's not quite so cheap)
which is why i'm only considering it at this point. But it's still cheaper than other sites though.
The Luna one might be worth getting though as a Coraline wig, I could always just say she grew her hair out.
I'll have to ask.
Also Considering dressing up as Princess Luna for Halloween next year... If i don't hate the character by then, So a good Luna wig might be worth getting before that.

My quest to find a pattern for River Tam's blue dress she wears in the movie isn't going well.
Found a site which sells them for over $200 nz dollars for one not including postage.... I'm willing to spend money on a costume, just not that much, it's cheaper for me to make it myself.
The dress is here if anyone wants to see it, it's pretty close actually.
At least now i know that it's actually two dresses instead of the one which could be annoying.
If anyone finds a good set of instructions or pattern online that will be a big help!

Found a yellow raincoat in the basement, needs a clean, but will be fine.
Decided to possibly drop the 'Little me' doll idea.
And that means all i need is the gumboots and the wig and that costume is done.

But for school, so I don't have to worry about make up or anything, I'm gonna be River Tam


New Costume

For those who follow my more recent updates, know that i have become a fan of the show My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic.
I've decided that me and a group of my friends are gonna be a MLP:FiM cosplay group for the Armageddon Expo next year.
This project along with my Kaylee dress are being saved for late November after my exams are done.

I already have a dress i'm going to use
so all i really need is wings and a wig and possibly a tail, ears and some cheap yellow slip on shoes.
I want to do a humanized version of the character, but i might end up going for a more anthro/furry type look if i have the cash.

Seen a few wigs online and they are pretty expensive especially in the style and length i'm looking for.

Wings however are a little bit more do able as i have found a tutorial online

So for the fluttershy costume, i'll need at least these

Shopping trip costume bits photos and possible new costume and hiatus

another update, containing a notice of hiatus due to upcoming school exams, and
photos of what I got on my shopping day which i blogged about a couple of weeks ago

Firstly to Illyria

and metallic blue base make up of some sort
(I don't have a clue about make up... I don't usually wear it)

Okay so it's slightly darker shade of blue than i wanted
You can't really tell from the photo, the light from my room washes out a lot of the blueness of it.
Changing fabric or thread to fabric paint because it will be less time consuming to apply and will be cheaper.
So still need to get that in white and yellow
and I'm still trying to work out how on earth i'm gonna do the goggles.....
I'll get back to you readers on that.

Okay realized my hoodie is too dark a blue for it's original purpose.
So, dark blue, a couple of light blue shades, and white fabric paint will be needed to turn it into a Princess Luna Hoodie.

And Finally the River Tam Boots

$50 dollars from the warehouse. I don't know how long they will last, but still a good find.
Worn with my blue dress, Instant River Tam costume.
Okay, it's not that accurate. but still, it's better to have something close then nothing, right.

New Costume: Illyria

Because of threats of having to move and a lot of schoolwork hanging over my head.
My Kaylee shindig dress is once again on hold.

That is a Sad episode.

Anyway other than that, shouldn't be too hard.
Just lots of blue make up and temporary dye for my hair.

Kaylee dress Update 5 (Pattern. FINALLY)

I have two things to say on the subject.
School and Homework.

Sorry haven't posted an update in a while. been kinda busy

I know halloween is only like four days away which left me having to pick a new costume.
Vampire slayer
also with exams coming up within the next few weeks I'll put it on hold til December when i have some more time.

Kaylee's Layer cake shindig dress, part 3. (Yay)

Went shopping, got some of the stuff i needed,
Just a zip some thread and some of the fabric,

I still need the lacey embroidered materiel for the overlay on the bodice, I've deiced to use a mix of net and cotton on the petticoat so i'll need to get some net and more cotton, still need all the ribbon for all the trim, some more white, peach and pink satin for the over-skirt, I'm swapping the organza out for satin coz it's cheaper, and i still need also to get the buttons


Satin, Zip, white cotton thread, white cotton fabric.

Got the lacy material for the overlay as well as the ruffly ribbon for the neck trim and for the sides of the bodice.
Had a quick look around in mum's sewing box and found a couple of spools of pink thread and another of white.

I'm using this set of instructions to make the dress, well I'm going to follow them as best as i can, they are quite vague.

Why i want to attempt it: I'm a firefly fan and this is one of my favorite costumes from the show, but it means not much time to do much else other than sewing even with a machine. SO MANY RUFFLES!!!!!

I want to wear it for Halloween, but after this project, i think next year I'll dress up as River Tam or Coraline

but first i have to get the materials but that means maths
